The price of an artesian well

The cost of an artesian well can vary significantly from one project to another. Several factors come into play when estimating costs. Here are some elements to consider in establishing the cost of your artesian well:

Nature of the soil

The nature of the soil greatly influences the cost of drilling. If drilling is done in unstable soil like clay, steel casing or perforated PVC casing may be necessary, unlike drilling in stable rock. Each type of soil requires specific equipment, each with different costs.

Site access

Site accessibility is a crucial factor. If the site is difficult to access or requires additional machinery, costs will increase. Here are some conditions to facilitate access :

  • A path with a width of 14 feet clear of obstacles (rocks, trees, branches, roots, construction materials, electrical wires, etc.).
  • A minimum clearance height of 13 feet 6 inches under electrical wires or other installations.
  • A minimum space of 16 feet wide, 55 feet long, and 45 feet high for the drilling location, with a surface as flat as possible.

Stability of the drill site

If the ground is too soft, a crushed rock pathway may be necessary. The drilling equipment weighs over 64,000 lbs, requiring a stable base.

Depth

In Quebec, groundwater is typically found at depths ranging from 100 to 300 feet, but it can be closer to the surface. Sometimes, drilling beyond 300 feet is necessary, requiring a more powerful submersible pump.

Water shortage

If, after drilling to a depth of 300 feet, there is still little or no water, hydrofracturing can be used to increase the water flow. This technique involves fracturing the subsurface around the wellbore with high-pressure water to bring water from nearby veins through lateral channels. This method is applicable only in rock formations.

Cost estimation

It's difficult to provide an exact price before evaluating your property. The cost of a standard well can range between $5,000 and $15,000, but may be higher depending on specific needs and the type of terrain. For an accurate assessment, please contact us at SOS Puits.
